Māui Hooks and Books

As part of our Pacifica Stories Unit we learned about Māui. We read "Māui and the Sun", "Māui and the Giant Ika", and the "Māori Creation Myth" in class and in our reading centers.

These stories were cut into different scenes and students practiced story sequencing by putting them in order and summarising a story in their own writing. We made our own demigod hooks too!

be sure to check out these awesome videos from class to learn more about the stories we read!

Rippa Rugby

What great weather we had for Rippa Rugby! Our coaches taught us relay games and had us practice our passing and other rugby skills. We ran and worked hard and had a great time in the field!

St. Patrick's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day Room 4!

For some engineering practice, Room 4 students made their own leprechaun traps based on what we know from leprechaun legends covered in class. It seems we will have to try again next year though... because when we arrived at school on St. Patrick's Day we found all the traps set off and all the green supplies in the classroom on the floors and on table! Luckily it seems whatever set off the traps left from gold coins for us to share. :) Here are some pictures of our traps. The students came up with some really creative ways to hold up materials, bait the traps, used math to measure how big aspects of the trap needed to be for the size of the leprechaun and engineered some clever settings!

Reading Buddies

We have been meeting with our reading buddies in the morning to share our library and class books with each other. This is great practice for our reading fluency as we have been practicing reading with expression, taking care to pause at comas and full stops, and to read the dialogue as a character would speak. While one student reads, the other listens and asks reading comprehension questions such as:

1. What do you think will happen next?

2. How do you think the character feels?

3. What is the main problem in this story?

4. Who are the main characters in this story?

5. What is the setting of the story?

These would be great questions to ask your reader's at home as they read a story to you!

Maritime Museum

We had a great time at the Maritime Museum! We got to practice our hand at sailing, feel what it was like to immigrate to New Zealand by boat, check out the amazing nautical history of this country and learn a lot from our Maritime Educator Mr. Lee Stanley. We were also lucky to watch a real cannon be shot off in the harbor! What a fun day!

Kiwi Can

In Kiwi Can classes we have been learning about responsibility, respect, good listening skills and talking about what we want to be when we grow up! Our Kiwi Can instructors always have fun learning games for us to play that use lots of movement and teamwork! At the end of the class, five students are put in the 'Kiwi Can' book for being great listeners and active participants in the lesson!

Save Fred!

Room 4 was busy trying to save a little gummy worm named Fred. He was out at sea when a big storm came and knocked him off of his boat! His life preserver ring (that might look to some like a gummy ring) was stuck under his boat and Fred was left floating on our blue sea tables on top of his boat. The challenge? Fred must be put back into his boat inside his life preserver, all without touching Fred, his ring, or his boat! How did we succeed in saving our poor gummy friend? Ask a Room 4 student to find out! 🚣
