Reading Buddies in Room 2

We got the chance to meet our new reading buddies in Room 2 this week! Our class has been working hard on reading with expression, good pacing, and asking our readers questions. We each picked out two books that we would like to read to our younger partners and practiced reading them out loud. We loved going to Room 2 and reading to our buddies so much that we spent some time afterwards doing learning though play with them!

Thursday Went Swimmingly Well!

We are so lucky! The week we got to start our swimming program! We made sure to have all of our swim gear packed and ready and headed to the pool first thing in the morning. When we arrived to the pool we changed and were split into three groups that swam in three different pools. The water wasn't too cold and it was a great way to start our day with some exercise!

Thank You Essential Workers!

We are very thankful for all of the essential workers that kept on working during the lockdown! We made this as a thank you for them. Mr. Lilo from our Kiwi Can classes let us use his beautiful song for our video and we learned the TikTok dance that goes with it!

Virtual Reality

We are learning to use VR headsets to take virtual field trips and interact in new ways with stories. The past couple of weeks we have gotten to step into the word of the dinosoars, visit underwater gardens around the world, and adventure with book charachters like the crow and discover the legend behind why he has black feathers, all without leaving the classroom! We will update everyone the new ways we are using the VR headsets as part of our inquiry.

Happy Birthday Queen Elizabeth!

We celebrated the Queen's Birthday Holiday this week by having a "Mad Hatter Tea Party" ! We decorated and ate yummy muffins made by Mrs. Salmon and had a toast to the Queen with our tea. :) The hats and crowns we created were all so unique!

Clean Hands, Mouldy Bread

We did an experiment about germs in class! We took three pieces of bread: one control bread than no one touched, a second bread that one person (Sahara) touched all ver after washing her hands really well, and a third piece of bread that we all touched with no soap and we also wiped it on Ms. Scott's dirty phone and laptop. The bread was placed in bags and we waited to see how the germs (bacteria) would grow. These were our results! Yuk! The bread touched by dirty hands was COVERED in mould because of the bacteria!!! We know now how important it is to wash our hands!

Samoan Language Week in Room 4

We had lots of fun learning greetings, numbers, weather words, and days of the wee in Samoan! We expanded out Samoan vocabulary by creating a travel brochure for Samoa that included some of the different animals, weather, foods, and phrases to know before you go in both English and Samoan. We learned a dance with Mr. Suni, and he even brought in a lavalava for us to try on and learn how to tie! We ended the week by learning about the symbols and steps needed to make a samoan siapo. You can see our own designs based on nature below! Tofa soifua!

Helping Our School

We had a great week back at school after being away for lockdown. We read some nice stories, worked a lot on self-care and how to show empathy, and most importantly we got to spend time with each other and have some fun in the classroom again! Our class voted on ways to help out our school community and we chose to:

1. Help pick up any litter on the grounds.
2. Weed the school garden to get it read for planting.
3. Write nice welcome back notes for friends we missed in other classes.

There is another project we are working on as well but it will stay a secret until it is ready to show. ;)

After we finished picking up litter, cleaning up leaves, and weeding we got to harvest some of the garden veggies and fruit from the grounds. :)
